Was anyone at the first performance of Once tonight post their Tony wins? How was it? Did Steve get a huge entrance applause?

I would definitely give him a warm hand on his entrance.

I'll bet there was some great energy in the room. Wish I could have been there.

Because it’s that thing of how he’s onstage before the show during the jam session…so…entrance applause doesn’t really apply to him :/

My friend was at the first post-Tony performance of The Book of Mormon and she tried to give Nikki entrance applause, but there was no opportunity.

Yeah I was thinking that, but was still hoping there could be some kind of response when he comes on during the pre show or when he starts to sing "Leave" and the lights slowly dim.

Nope no entrance applause. It really wasn't much different from any other performance of the show I've seen.

It's usually audience reaction, not the show that is much difference.

Overall, there hasn't been much talk about 'first post-Tony' shows this year.

I guess there's no real big "favourite" show this year, maybe? ONCE isn't the kind of show that allows for applause of this nature, and there isn't much in the way of "fandom" surrounding either NICE WORK or PORGY AND BESS for the other acting awards so I guess few people care enough to make a special effort to applaud post-Tonys.

I was at Starcatcher on Monday, and there was extra applause both at the top of the show for the whole cast and when Christian entered as Blackstache.

From the times I've seen it, NEWSIES gets the eqivalent to post-Tony audience reaction every night, so I bet it is crazy there. When I saw it, the show was literally halted a good time due to the applause that swelled a good two or three times after "Carrying' the Banner," "Seize the Day," and "King of New York.". I've seen quite a few show-stopping numbers in my day, but I've never seen that kind of audience reaction at a show before. I can only imagine it now!

I was at the third preview of Newsies and could tell that people had read or heard about the mid-show standing ovations because people in the audience looked around at other audience members after the big show-stoppers, as if to say "Ooo who's gonna stand up...? This standard has been set and I have to tell everyone how the standing ovation I took a part in stopped the show." What resulted was a sparse, hesitant, almost obligatory standing O after "Seize The Day" and one other audience pleaser.

I hate that it's like these shows need the Tonys to validate and elicit a stronger audience reaction. We live in an age where people rely on other people's opinions and can't just evaluate the work they've just witnessed on their own and form their own opinions.

On other threads, folks have theorized that people feel obliged to be overly enthusiastic to rationalize the extraordinary expense of theater tickets. I think that has some merit, especially combined with people feeling compelled to join in, that it would somehow be disrespectful to be to lone audience member not standing.

"It's usually audience reaction, not the show that is much difference."

That's what I was referring too.

And I was at Newsies on Monday night and it paled in comparison to the first preview.

In terms of what? Audience reaction? Performance quality?
